Less landfill. More compost. Greener planet.

Putting food scraps in the green FOGO bin or home compost pile creates compost and soil for a greener planet and leaves more room in your landfill bin. Food waste in a landfill doesn’t compost; instead, it rots anaerobically (without oxygen), creating methane gas that is more damaging to the ozone layer.

What can go in the FOGO bin?

All this garden and food goodness is made into compost and soil locally by Peats Soil & Garden Supplies at Brinkley.

    • Meat, seafood and bones (yes – chicken carcasses, but only loose or in a compostable bag)
    • Prawn, oyster and egg shells
    • Cheese and non-liquid dairy
    • Bread, pasta, rice, crackers etc.
    • Vegetables and fruit
    • Coffee grounds and paper tea bags
    • Garden, weeds and lawn cuttings (keep lid open to dry out condensation and avoid compaction of green waste)
    • Pet waste – loose or in compostable bags only (not biodegradable). Cat litter must be marked compostable – not crystals or clay-based
    • Hair and nail clippings
    • Tissues and paper towel
    • Compostable packaging and greasy pizza boxes and takeaway containers

How to get the most of your new bins – and reduce bin theft

We strongly encourage all residents to paint their property number and street name on the front of their bins to discourage bin theft.

Our Kerbside Bins page has lots of further information about bins as well as top tips to make sure your bin gets collected.
