FOGO extn Emu Bay and Brownlow 2024

More households in Kangaroo Island to get FOGO collection

Kangaroo Island Council has supported the extension of the service boundary for ‘Food Organics Garden Organics’ (green bin) waste collection services to outer Emu Bay and Brownlow.

The FOGO green lidded bin will be collected fortnightly on a Wednesday, with weekly collection over the summer period between 18 December 2024 and 29 January 2023. Due to Christmas Day, the Wednesday 25 December collection will occur on Thursday 26 December.

To support these residents in implementing FOGO waste collection at their property, they will receive:

·         1 x 240 litre FOGO green lid bin

·         1 x FOGO sticker attached to your green bin

·         1 x 7 litre kitchen caddy

·         1 x roll of 75 compostable bags for use in your kitchen caddy to capture your food scraps ready to place into your green lid bin

·         1 x flyer with information about using your green bin for food scraps.

When will they receive the new green bin and kitchen caddy?

Delivery of the new FOGO bin, kitchen caddy and compostable bags will occur during the week beginning Monday 14 October.

When will the rubbish truck start emptying the new green bins?

The first FOGO collection is scheduled to commence on Wednesday 23 October (place the bin out the night before).

How can I guard against bin theft?

Once the new bin is delivered, owners/residents are responsible for its security and maintenance. Our operators will verify delivery by taking a photo of the new bin in situ at the entrance to each property.

Unfortunately, previous bin rollouts resulted in some theft of the delivered bins, especially at unattended holiday homes. Once delivered, FRWA will not replace stolen or damaged bins. If residents will not be at the property during the delivery week, we advise they arrange for someone to collect the bin from the entranceway and store it securely on their behalf.

We encourage all residents to clearly mark their bins with a large number on the front, and the street name underneath. This may help prevent theft and misplacement. Numbering also aids our drivers in identifying when multiple houses place their bins next to each other that may otherwise appear as extra/additional bins.

What can I put in a green FOGO bin?

Good question. Some interesting items that you may be surprised can go in green FOGO bins:

·         Meat, seafood and chicken carcasses

·         Bones, prawn and oyster shells

·         Coffee grinds and tea bags

·         Dairy products like cheese and yoghurt

·         Shredded paper, tissues and paper towels

·         Hair and fingernails

·         Pet poo

·         General food and garden waste

·         Only use certified compostable bags (not bio-degradable)

How will I know if my Emu Bay or Brownlow property is eligible?

The included areas are featured in the two maps at the bottom of this post. Property owners will soon get a printed letter and FOGO flyer from the Kangaroo Island Council.
