Kerbside Collections

Kerbside Bins

The Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority (FRWA) manages kerbside collection of recycling, food and garden organics (FOGO) and general waste to landfill for more than 32,000 properties across the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island.

All waste types are collected on a fortnightly schedule. You can search your kerbside bin collection schedule using your street name in the search panel at the top of this page.

Residents and businesses are responsible for purchasing, maintaining and replacing their bins – they are not provided as part of your council rates. Plastic bins have a limited lifespan due to exposure to the outdoor elements and the demands of collection. After 7 years, a bin will become prone to cracking, splitting, snapping or rusting and this is considered beyond the serviceable life of a bin and will need to be replaced by the resident when it breaks.

One collection per waste stream per council assessment number

Completed properties are entitled to one fortnightly landfill and recycling bin collection, (plus green FOGO if zoned), per assessment number.

Please check your council rates notice as some properties may have multiple dwellings on one assessment number, and therefore be entitled to only one of each collection.

Vacant blocks, house builds in progress and blocks with ished/s without a dwelling are not entitled to kerbside collections.

Extra collection services are available. Please see Additional Bin Services and Exceptional Circumstances (EC) Bins for further information.

Purchasing bins

Bins may be purchased at any of the FRWA Depots (Goolwa, Strathalbyn, Yankalilla and Kingscote). You do not need show ID, residency or pre-order bins. FRWA also sells spare parts for current bins.

You may purchase bins elsewhere, but they must be the same size, shape and colour as shown below (note: the landfill bin may currently have a red or bright blue lid).  Please note, FRWA only carries spare parts for the current bins we stock and sell, so please check with your retailer if purchasing elsewhere.

Preventing bin theft and multiple bin non-collection

Did you know one of the easiest ways to deter bin theft is to paint your street number and street name clearly on the front lower half of your bin?

Residents are responsible for purchasing, replacing, and maintaining their own rubbish bins. Adding clear identification helps protect your bin.

It not only stops bins from going missing, but it also helps collection drivers recognise which bin belongs to which house if there are multiple or excess bins.

Holiday periods and long weekends may see a spike in bin thefts. Holiday rentals, households away on annual leave, shiny new bins or bins left out can also be targets for bin theft.

Top tips to make sure your bin gets collected

It’s important to present and manage your bins in a compliant manner to ensure your bin gets emptied as well as meeting environmental requirements. Non-compliant bins and presentations will not be collected or returned for. If your bin is obstructed, too heavy, contaminated or compacted, FRWA does not return. We will return if our driver has missed your bin or street.

FRWA trucks feature satellite tracking, automatic scales, lift records, bin non-compliance reporting and 5 video cameras, and these will be used when reviewing why your bin was not collected.

How to avoid the non-collection of your bin

  • Bins out the night before collection day – times and runs vary. We do not return if you miss the truck.
  • Don’t contaminate the recycling and green FOGO bin. Put the right waste type in the right bin. Repeat contamination risks suspension of collections.
  • Food waste goes in the green FOGO bin – yes even meat and seafood bones, prawn and oyster shells, bread, dairy, greasy takeaway containers as well as tissues, paper towels, and pet waste. Compostable cat litter is OK, crystals and clay litter in the landfill bin.
  • Bin lids must be closed. Overfull bins drop waste on your road or into the truck arm hydraulics.
  • 50cm gap between bins.
  • 1 metre gap between parked cars, stobie poles, fences, letter boxes, trees and bushes.
  • Leave a 50cm clearance behind your bin and any fencing, signage, cars, letter box, signage, greenery or equipment like basketball rings etc. Your bin may be pushed back or sideways during the collection process.
  • Look up – is your bin clear for 3 metres above – watch overhanging trees.
  • Keep all recycling loose – no bags.
  • Don’t use bin liners in recycling and green FOGO bins (unless it’s a compostable liner in the green bin).
  • No batteries in any bin – watch out for hidden batteries in wearable tech (watches and headphones), vapes, stick vacuums, toys, old smoke detectors and power tools. Free disposal at FRWA depots or search bcycle.com.au
  • Avoid a compaction blockage – ensure your bin is not too tightly packed, especially folded cardboard and sticks/branches.
  • Moist weeds and lawn clippings (and cat litter) are known to start decomposing and forming a compaction block. Keep your green FOGO lid open to reduce condensation and stir/fluff up your green waste before collection.
  • Styrofoam should be wrapped in paper or plastic bags and placed in the landfill bin, as it creates an electrostatic charge blockage.
  • Consider buying a rubber bin spring to help keep your bin lid closed in windy locations. Available from FRWA Depots (NB: bin springs need at least 1/4 bin load of recycling to ensure they open when lifted)
  • Do not overfill – maximum weight 50kgs.
  • Bring the bin in after collection.
  • If you have an annual council-supplied exceptional circumstances (EC) bin or paid additional service, ensure you renew each financial year to avoid non-collection.
  • Put your street number and street name on the bin.
  • Don’t place out more than one bin of each waste stream unless it has a current sticker (EC or paid additional) or you have paid for an extra collection.
  • Put your bin out the front of your house, unless advised otherwise.
  • Avoid placing the same bins in groups (e.g. next to your neighbours) unless both bins are clearly marked with different street numbers.
  • The lid opening must face the kerb, incorrect placement causes lid breakage.
  • When placing out the 140lt landfill bin with the larger 240lt bins during the summer peak collections, place the smaller landfill bin first so our driver can see it easily.

Please fill out a Report a Missed Bin form if your bin has been missed and you have complied with the dot point tips above.
